Translating ‘saudade’

This video is in English, despite the Portuguese title on YouTube. The slides are a little out of sync, but the overall message still comes across, I think. I talk specifically about translating the Portuguese word ‘saudade’ into English – a word which is supposed to be famously untranslatable – but the principles involved apply to all translation: words should not be translated in isolation, but within their linguistic and semantic contexts.

  1. Such great ideas for translating ‘saudade’.

I’ve always thought of the untranslatability of ‘saudade’ as a myth. Good job dispelling it!

Thank you for your cogent explanation, John!
